چکیده

Abstract: Pteridium is a cosmopolitan genus of ferns that possess nectaries on its fronds (fern leaves), thereby attracting ants. Foliar (or extrafloral) are nectar-producing glands not related to pollination, but rather attract ants and other arthropods. found in 101 fern species, belonging 11 genera six families. The aim the study characterize community visit esculentum subsp. arachnoideum, as well daily seasonal ant abundance different frond development stages. was conducted Atlantic Forest Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Bimonthly collections were established, where 30 expanding fully expanded randomly marked. In each 1-hour shift starting at 8:30 am ending 5:30 pm, observed for presence Thirty three species recorded arachnoideum fronds, distributed into subfamilies 13 genera. most abundant Solenopsis sp.1 Ectatomma tuberculatum. Eight foraging tropical bracken fronds. tuberculatum has been feeding patrolling Ant activity peak mid-day during rainy season. rich (the highest until now species) diverse mainly generalist predatory (Ectatomma sp.1) entire period suggests positive interaction between arachnoideum.

Allelopathy of Bracken Fern (Pteridium arachnoideum): New Evidence from Green Fronds, Litter, and Soil

The neotropical bracken fern Pteridium arachnoideum (Kaulf.) Maxon. (Dennstaedtiaceae) is described as an aggressive pioneer plant species. It invades abandoned or newly burned areas and represents a management challenge at these invaded sites. Native to the Atlantic Forest and Cerrado (Tropical Savanna) Brazilian biomes, P. arachnoideum has nevertheless become very problematic in these conserv...

Isolation of an active glucoside in bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum.

An active glucoside that enhanced release of histamine from rat peritoneal mast cells was isolated from a toxic fraction of bracken fern, Pteridium aquilinum, by partition column chromatography on Sephadex G-25. It was a yellowish amorphous powder on freeze-drying, readily soluble in water or ethanol, and insoluble in ether. It was hydrolysed with beta-glucosidase to release D-glucose. It was a...

A comparative study of resource allocation in Pteridium in different Brazilian ecosystems and its relationship with European studies.

Pteridium is a cosmopolitan genus that acts as an invasive species in many parts of the world. Most research on this genus has occurred in Europe, and there is a lack of data on it from South America, in spite of causing considerable conservation problems. We compared the biomass allocation of P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum in two ecosystems in Brazil - Atlantic forest and Brazilian savanna....

Observations on the Microanatomy of the Spermatozoid of the Bracken Fern (Pteridium aquilinum)

Salient features of structure of the spermatozoid of a fern (Pteridium aquilinum) have been determined by a combination of visual and ultraviolet microscopy, with electron microscopy of shadow-cast whole mounts and thin sections, using magnifications up to but not exceeding 50,000 diameters. Attention has been concentrated on the arrangement rather than on the internal details of the various pa...

Effect of bracken (Pteridium a quilinum) and dryopteris (Dryopteris juxtaposita) fern toxicity in laboratory rabbits.

Experimental studies with Bracken and Dryopteris ferns @ 25% concentrate ration mixture were conducted in rabbits. Fern fed rabbits showed progressive anaemia, leukopaenia, lymphopaenia and relative heterophilia. Significant elevations in serum enzymes like serum glutamate oxaloactate transminase (SGOT), serum glutamate pyruvate transminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), urea and creatinin...
